Sikorsky, part of Lockheed Martin, has teamed up with CAE, a global training and simulation expert, to deliver the CAE Magnetic Anomaly Detection-Extended Role (MAD-XR) system for installation on MH-60R SEAHAWK® helicopters in service with the U.S. and Royal Australian Navies. CAE designed and built the system, which Sikorsky integrated with the helicopter’s primary mission computer. This passive digital MAD sensor equips the maritime helicopter with enhanced capabilities to detect and track submarines under the sea.

The MAD-XR is compact and efficient, combining sensitive magnetometers with a processor/interface unit weighing less than 20 pounds (9 kg) including cabling and mounting equipment. It provides crews with audio alerts upon target detection and displays contact and range details. Installation is possible inside the MH-60R’s tail cone without permanent airframe changes, allowing easy removal and reinstallation between helicopters as required.
Sikorsky, CAE, and the navies worked closely to integrate, test, and refine the MAD-XR system. Early in 2024, the U.S. Navy rolled out software and hardware upgrades to MH-60R operators that support the new digital MAD capability, included in periodic technology refreshes to maintain mission readiness.
In September 2024, Sikorsky was awarded a $21 million contract by the U.S. Navy, with CAE subcontracted to supply 20 MAD kits to the Royal Australian Navy, six to the U.S. Navy, and two for evaluation by the U.S. Navy Reserve, with deliveries concluding by May 2026. The contract also contains options for future orders in 2025 and 2026.
Cliff Kyle, General Manager of Sikorsky Australia, praised the Royal Australian Navy for being the first MH-60R operator to field this cutting-edge digital MAD technology. The CAE MAD-XR system markedly improves upon the previous AN/ASQ-81 sensor used on SH-60B helicopters, which was heavier (90 lbs), externally mounted, and trailed behind the aircraft via cable.
